My partner and I have just started collecting "Clarkes" fairy lights after discovering through family history that he is a direct descendant of Samuel Clarke. We are both amazed by the number of different designs. Recently we purchased "Clarkes fairy lamps" by Dorothy Tibbetts, hoping we might find a little bit more about the man, or even an old photo. Do any of your members know of any personal details of Samuel Clarke? We have copies of his will and patents.

We look forward ...

I don't collect tumblers anymore but I couldn't help but watch a recent auction for three Mount Washington decorated Burmese tumblers. I was, of course, interested in what they went for.

I was wondering what you thought of the final results? Too low? Too high? About right?

There are a couple of things I noted about this vase that make me wonder about its origin. Though the decoration could possibly be an obscure Mt Washington or Webb decoration, it is only decorated on one side and the pontil is not polished. Does any one have an idea what this piece is?

A couple of years ago I bought an Acorn Fairy lamp and the group decided it might be Bohemian. Well, I found a pitcher on eBay that has the same rigaree work on the leafs and acorn. I think it could be a clue to my Fairy Lamp. Any ideas?

I believe this is the shade for a Diamond Candle Co. base fairy lamp. The two examples I found quickly are shown as U-129 and U-130. I know they also had a pressed tin base with the name of the company pressed into it. Has there been an article done on these lamps in the past?

I have been contacted by a fairy lamp collector in Washington State who would like to find a buyer for a rather extensive contemporary fairy lamp collection. I only have two family photos that show a portion of the collection......there are many more available.

[center]

In a couple weeks the owner will begin selling the collection (one and a time) on eBay. Please let me know if you, or someone you know, have an interest in this collection. I will put you in touch with the owner.

This lamp recently sold on ebay as number 170347615930 and it is marked on the shade with some unique notes. As usual, the base is embossed with the Fairy and typical S. Clarke Fairy Pyramid. The shade was marked with the common acid mark of “Trade Mark, Fairy”, however, there was more to the acid mark. It also said “Made Abroad”. Has anyone seen this additional information on a lamp piece before? Was this mark necessary to meet import duty fees, or something else?

I have seen several of these lamps on ebay, but to the best of my recollection, this is the first one I have seen with a hole in the back of the head. The lamp is similar to the R-336, R337 and R-338 lamps on page 104 in the Elegance in Candle Lighting book. Have a look and give me some ideas why it would be there. The link is :

OT: Miniature Oil Lamp Auction

Since many fairy lamp collectors also collect miniture oil lamps, I thought I would pass along this auction.

The second half of the Carl Cotting collection of miniature lamps is set for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 6th at the new Jeffrey Evans auction gallery in Mt. Crawford, Virginia. The auction consists of 450 lots; 250 lots of miniatures and 200 lots of whale oil and full size lamps. The auction is in Virginia but they accept absentee bids.
