Red Nailsea three-piece fairy lamp
Hi Forum Members,
I am looking for a three piece red nailsea fairy lamp. Anyone seen one for sale? I don't travel much because of my husband's health issues and I have never seen victorian fairy lamps for sale in Utah. Is ebay my only option? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well.....eBay could be your best option, especially if you don't get to travel much.
Don't pass up an opportunity to pick up a part when you find one. You may come across a mate sometime down the road. Even if it is not the color nailsea you are looking for, perhaps it will make a good trade for someone else.
Good luck....don't give up.
Jim.

Re: Red Nailsea three-piece fairy lamp
Thanks for the reply. Are fairy size or pyramid size more common in nailsea? And for traveling, I don't have a clue where to travel to look for fairy lamps. I have a friend who collects pickle castors and says the Hillsboro show in California is the place to go for pickle castors. Just hunting around from shop to shop in any given big city seems to me to be a hit and miss--probably miss--proposition.

Re: Red Nailsea three-piece fairy lamp
I think fairy-size is more common in Nailsea. Red, bue and Citron seem to be evenly distributed (in that order) with white being the most difficult to find. And, the rarest of them all.....rainbow Nailsea.
I have heard a lot of good things about the Hillsboro Show but, I have never been. It seems like when fairy lamp collectors went they always came home with a "treasure". But, like like any other show, I suspect there are no "bargains". Another suggestion, even if you don't see a fairy lamp at a show....ask. Quite often, some dealers will have a few at home....just waiting for a buyer. Others will say, "Yea, I had one but I sold it." The important thing is to establish a network of dealers and collectors. You just never know what they might come up with.
Now a suggestion re: your hunt for a red Nailsea. Sometimes (not always) fellow collectors are more likely to trade than sell. I would rather sell to a stranger than a fellow collector. I'm not sure why that is. For me it's kinda like doing business with family....which, btw, is never a good idea.

Re: Red Nailsea three-piece fairy lamp
Jim,
That is an interesting dynamic that a collector would rather sell to a stranger than a fellow collector. As I think about it, I understand. I have a victorian home that we have restored, furnished and decorated. Over the years I have bought a lot of victorian furniture and decorating items for the house. As invariably happens, I upgrade. That means that I have something to sell. I guess I am afraid someone I know who buys one of my items might think I over charged or will find flaws in the item, so I too feel more comfortable selling to a stranger. This past year I had a small sofa that was excess. My sister really wanted to buy it. I gave it to her because I couldn't bring myself to sell it to her. What I really hope is that someone on this forum will see a cranberry nailsea three-piece fairy lamp or a white nailsea pyramid dome somewhere in their travels and because they are not in the market to purchase will let me know where they saw it. I ran across a three piece cranberry nailsea lamp a while ago, but the price was $950. I thought that was too much. However, that may be what I will have to pay. Thanks so much for your information.

genden 70: You might want to try the internet and look for James Julia Auctions. He is located here in Fairfield, Maine and is nationally known for his fine glass and lamp auctions. I have seen some of his items listed on ebay at times. I am not sure if he has a newsletter that he will mail to you when he holds these high end sales. It might be worth a try. Good luck. John

Thanks so much for the reply. I believe the next James Julia lamp and glass auction is in November. I will keep watching. Your information is valuable to me.

Check out the latest new topic in the "e-Bay Discussion" forum. John just may have found something you might be interested in. Don't let the missing lamp cup deter you from going after it. If you need one, I'll help you.
