Backward R and old english night lights Empty Backward R and old english night lights

Hi, we are new to fairly lamp collecting and recently purchased two pryamid sized lamps. One we know is the old english night light distributed by Faroy (and has many imperfections but we still love it Smile) but the other we are a little confused about. The top is amber and has the tappered openning like the Faroy but the tapper is a little more slanted. The cup is lighter than the Faroy base and does not have the stick figure logo but has the backward 'R' in Fairy. We looked through the forum and found some references but wondered if there were any definite answers about the base with backward 'R' Are there different versions of the Faroy? Is there a more modern copy? Thanks for any information you can provide.

I wish I had a definitive answer for you , but I do not. This topic came up in the very first issue of our Newsletter (Issue I, November 1996) The following was published in the next issue:

What is the significance of the backward “R” in the Clarke candle cup?

We received several opinions related to the backward “R.” Most members believe that it is a mold maker's mistake. One of our members suggests that the mold was only in production one year beginning late 1892 then destroyed. However, no one has any conclusive evidence. In addition, there is at least one example of an upside down “TRADE” in the word “TRADEMARK” of Clarke’s candle cups.

In reviewing Jim & Pat’s collection, they found that they have not one, but four pyramid candle cups with a backward “R.” One of these is a contemporary cobalt blue crystal cup. We think there is more to this story. What do you think?

So far, no one can provide a difinitive answer. Personally, I am leaning toward a "contemporary" lamp cup instead of an early mold makers mistake. But, that is just one ol' man's opinion.

Jim.
